Advanced Building Concepts was
brought in early during the planning phase
of the Newport YMCA pool project, to help
the owner select an architect. The
Design/Build approach was used to construct
the building to save time, so that the YMCA
could open its pool doors to members as soon
as possible.
ABC’s value engineering recommendation, to
change the mechanical system from an
electric dehumidification system to an air
exchange system, saved the YMCA $50,000 in
installation costs, plus considerable
long-term utility savings.
The building team recommended the
introduction of natural light inside the
pool area, with a wall of windows along the
east side of the facility. Work on the
project included the demolition of the
building down to the foundation, the
replacement of wood walls with masonry,
installation of a vapor tight ventilating
insulated roof system, and an efficient heat
recovery/air exchanger, to control the air
quality, temperature and humidity of the
building.
